Tormeys Scholarship – The Barra Flynn Memorial Trophy

Tormeys Solicitors provides an annual Scholarship to Leaving Certificate students from the Athlone, Moate, Ferbane, Ballymahon, Roscommon, Ballinasloe and Tullamore school areas. This fund is awarded to students that attain the highest leaving certificate points and who have chosen to pursue a legal course at a 3rd level institution.

The presentation of the Scholarship commenced in 1992, and whilst there are now a number of scholarships presented by corporate bodies within the Athlone area, Tormeys Solicitors was the first to embrace this incentive to encourage young adults to study Law.

Presenters of the prize have included Oliver A. Macklin, President of the District Court, Mr. Harry Whelehan, S.C., Mr. Justice J.J.P. MacKenzie, Mr. Justice T.C. Smyth, Mr. Justice Diarmuid O’Donovan, Deputy Albert Reynolds, T.D., Mr. Justice Richard Johnston, Mr. Justice Joseph Finnegan, Judge Desmond Hogan, retired Judge Michael Connellan and Denis Naughten, T.D.

The Scholarship Fund in total is valued at over €2,500.00 with first place being €1,200. Second place receives €600.00 and third place receives €300.00. These amounts are payable for one year to students attending a faculty of law in any University or Institute of Technology in the Republic of Ireland.

To recognise the school or college’s contribution, Tormeys donate the sum of €500.00 to the winning establishment. The winning school will have the highest cumulative points for law students within that year. In 2000 to commemorate the Millennium, Tormeys introduced the presentation of a perpetual trophy to the winning school. The winner and the winning school each receive a silver perpetual trophy.

In more recent years, the fund was renamed the Barra Flynn Memorial Scholarship in honour of the late Managing Partner at Tormeys.
